Is moving to the Gold Coast a good decision?

My wife and I have been looking forward to moving to Queensland for years now and have set the date for November 2012. The decision of moving is largely to do with: "moving to a better and safer place, where we will feel safer walking the streets and raising our 7 children". We have spent all of our life in Sydney. The last ten years in the western part of Sydney. Let me tell you this is definitely not a place I would recommend raising children. Western Sydney has just become so foreign to me that I don’t feel like I’m Australian anymore, walking on Aussie soil…. Anyway, a bit off the topic.
My concern and the reason why I am posting this question is because, I have recently been reading scary things about the Gold Coast! In the past, I read many posts that spoke of Queensland as being a wonderful, safe and beautiful place to raise a family. This has changed so much over the past year, according to what I am reading on posts now. This is really worrying me. Please, as I said, any feedback would be appreciated. I can’t tell you how much we have been looking forward to moving and starting (God willing), a beautiful, peaceful and prosperous life. One where our children can grow in pleasant surroundings. We are not wealthy, so we cannot afford overly expensive areas, though somewhere to the range of maximum $400 per week (rent). I have looked at rental properties and was considering Tugun and surroundings?? We are both involved in health so I know that our hospital jobs shouldn’t be to much of an issue, though the most important thing is safety and good schooling for our children.Thank you in advance for your responses!!! 
Is moving to the Gold Coast still a good decision?
The Gold Coast is so nice, and there are so many different suburbs where you can experience different lifestyles that I’m sure you could find a good spot for you and you’re family. You can move to Surfers Paradise if you want hustle and bustle and be close to the beach, or move to one of the suburbs 10-15 minutes out like Southport or Burleigh.
If you’re really concerned about the areas I would suggest looking into a few Gold Coast rental properties and just drive around the area, talk to some locals, visit the schools, etc. you should be pleasantly surprised.

I wouldn’t pass it up!! I have a friend who lives in the Mimoso area with her 2 boys. Says she loves it there.
